The average grant award, if an appeal is successful, is 25% of the original appeal.  This is not a change of policy but reflects current grant making levels.  This is not absolute and appeals at higher levels are awarded and in exceptional circumstances an applicant may be awarded the total original request.  The Trustees encourage applicants therefore to actively seek alternative sources of funding in addition to any pending appeal with the Fund.

The online grant application form is for use if seeking a General grant and is not for use when applying for a Research grant

  • Appeals received with funding requests of £10,000 and below will initially be considered under the small grants programme and will be referred to the next Main Grant Board Meeting where the recommendation is to award more than the maximum of £5,000. There are no application deadlines for the small grant programme.


This does not apply if you are seeking Research funding.

You are required to contact your nominated referees at the time of application and request that they send a reference within a reasonable time of your initial contact (via email to  The referees will not be contacted at the outset by the Baily Thomas Administration Office.

Applications cannot be considered by the Trustees until both references have been received and the onus in on the person completing the application to contact the Referees NOT the Baily Thomas Administration Office.
